Round Trip Bus Service to
Portland |
| On November 29th Hood River
County Transportation District started round trip
service from The Dalles and Hood River to Portland
each week. The bus leaves The Dalles and then Hood
River each Thursday and stops at the Gateway Max
Station and Oregon Health Sciences Center then
arrives at the Clackamas Town Center by mid
morning. The bus leaves Clackamas Town Center in
the afternoon, stops at Oregon Health Sciences
Center and the Gateway Max Station and then back
to Hood River and The Dalles by early evening. The
cost is $8.00 each way. For more information visit

Vineyard & Winery
Accounting Workshop |
This workshop will cover
basic accounting terms and briefly go over the
different types of organizations (Partnership,
LLC, Corporation) and how that effects your
accounting. Using sample chart accounts customized
for vineyards and wineries, the instructor will
delve into depreciation methods and required tax
depreciation lives, preproductive expenses,
various, tax elections, required costs to be
included in inventory, sample methods to cost your
inventory, cash vs. accrual, etc.

Three New Appointments to
Oregon Investment Board
Robert
B. Brown, Robert A. DeGraff and Andrea L.
Klaas have been appointed by Govenor Kulongoski to
the Oregon Investment Board. Each will serve a
three year term.
The Oregon Investment Board is a seven
member volunteer board appointed by the Governor
of Oregon. The board is charged with policy
direction, funding criteria and funding decisions.
There are two members appointed from Multnomah,
Hood River and Wasco Counties and one at-large
member. The Board also works with their partners
in Washington-Washington Investment Board-through
the Bi-State
Advisory Council. The Oregon
Investment Board (OIB) is responsible for the
administration of the Oregon Development Plan as
presented in the October 1999 Plan Update, within
Multnomah, Hood River, and Wasco, the Oregon
counties lying in the Columbia River Gorge
National Scenic Area. Proposals submitted for
funding consideration should show that the project
would help to strengthen and diversify the economy
of the region. |

Industry and Education
Connection Plus: A Special Award Presentation for
Alan Cunningham for 2007 Oregon Technology
Educator of the Year Honorable Mention Award.
The goal of this event is to
connect teachers with industry
professionals, educate teachers and industry
professionals about how they can work together in
building a better community, and distribute at
least 3 Lego Robotics kits to deserving teachers.
There will be presentations from Insitu
about how they give back to the community, STRUT
(Students Recycling Used Technology), John
Ossowski TechStart Education Foundation and Alan
Cunningham 2007 Oregon Technology Educator of the
Year Honorable Mention.

Oregon Arts Commission
Announces New Grant Program |
The Oregon Arts
Commission announces a new Arts & Cultural
Tourism Grant program. Applications will be
accepted from Oregon arts organizations and units
of local governments through January 31, 2008.
The Oregon Arts Commission established the
Cultural Tourism Grants to support projects and
partnerships that advance arts-based cultural
tourism activities. The new program, made possible
by legislature's full funding of the Commission's
Creative Oregon Initiative, fosters stronger links
between the arts, culture, the tourism industry
and local economic development.
The
guidelines and applications for the Cultural
Tourism grants are available online through the
grants section of the Arts Commission's website:

YoPros Monthly Business

Who:
The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce When: Thursday,
Dec 6, 2007 at 5:00 pm Where: 404 W. 2nd
St, The Dalles, OR 97058 What: Every month
the YoPros highlight a local business or
organization. It is a chance to network, learn
more about the community, and get into the
innerworkings of a local business/organization.
This month The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce
will be featured.
The Young
Professionals Group (YoPros) is open to all
members aged 21 to 40ish. Currently the YoPros
"showcase" two Chamber businesses per month, and
discuss other interesting and worthwhile projects.
The mission of YoPros is to connect, empower,
and retain young professionals of The Dalles and
the surrounding area through social, professional,

RARE Participates Working In
The Gorge |
The mission of the RARE
Program is to increase the capacity of rural
communities to improve their economic, social, and
environmental conditions, through the assistance
of trained graduate-level participants who live
and work in communities for 11 months. Qualified
college graduates (with a bachelor's degree) and
graduate-level students who are selected as RARE
participants assist communities and agencies in
the development and implementation of plans for
achieving a sustainable natural resource base and
improving rural economic conditions while gaining
community building and leadership skills.
Three new RARE participants recently
started working in the Gorge. Julia Babcock is the
Special Projects Manager for the Port of Cascade
Locks. A native of Florida, Julia will be working
on various projects including an underpass
improvement project to the Marine Park, a
treatment plan for the removal of Milfoil, and an
improvement project for the Visitors Center in the
Marine Park. She is looking forward to continuing
her planning career and education here in Oregon.
Maggie Gulick is working for the Farmers
Conservation Alliance (FCA) in Hood River.
Orginally from North Carolina, Maggie will be
engaged in several projects with FCA including the
planning and design for an energy resouce guide
for rural Oregonians as well as help with FCA's
involvement in sustainable technology
development. Sarah Hackley is a second year
RARE participant and Florida native is working as
the sole employee of the Gorge Grown Food Network.
She is working with the all volunteer Steering
Committee and community volunteers developing
long-terrm strategic planning and grantwriting,
expanding and improving the Gorge Grown Farmers'
Market, and a comprehensive Community Food
Assessment for Hood River County.

Port Hires New Executive
Director |
Rodger Ford, President of
the elected, three-member Port Commission,
announced on Dec 5th that the Port Commission has
voted to hire Marc D. Thornsbury as the new
Executive Director for the Port of Klickitat. The
decision comes after an extensive search, led by
long-time Port Consultant Byron Hanke, former
Director of the Port of Vancouver, that evaluated
more than 20 applicants from across the Northwest.
Thornsbury was born in Walla Walla and has
been living in Portland for the last 38 years. He
has a bachelor's degree in Business Administration
from Portland State University and was most
recently working as a manager for a regional
fright forwarding and Customhouse brokerage firm.
"I'am eager to work with the Port
Commission and the residents of Klickitat County
to develop the top-notch properties and facilities
that will attract business and industry to this
wonderful area," Thornsbury said. "I plan to
bring the values of quality, integrity and honesty
to the job, and welcome this opportunity to
collaborate with others to insure the economic
vitality of Klickitat County now, and in the years
to come."
